Catalina Island Marathon March 14, 2026 Race Comms

CARA provides important Race Communications and Support for Catalina Marathon. Volunteer ham radio operators are placed at critical stations on the route.

Mid-Air Junction: Ron Louden KK6ZVA

Net Control and Finish Line: Jeff Cowart KK6TRC and Gail Anderson KJ6GHS

 

Race weather was warm on the interior and cool and cloudy in Avalon, Comms team dealt with a lot of issues during the race including one runner with a dislocated finger which required transport to the local hospital to reduce the risk of losing the finger to complications. 

Racers that could not complete the race were part of the coordination from field stations to net control, net control tracked incoming updates and provided communications back to field operators.

Gabe K6GLS also provided a bridge to local emergency resources, Conservancy and race management teams.

All race preparations including depoyment of Herbie, our cross-band repeater helped in providing high level of communications to all ham radio operators.
